We homeschool year-round...

because it benefits our lifestyle for flexibility and the boys' ability to retain information rather than a whole lot of review at each year's beginning.

My neighbor's child attends school from September until May.

We start our day around 8:00 a.m. and end by noon most days. Some days an hour or two more of school work occurs as needed in the late afternoon or evening.

My neighbor's child has to get on the bus at 6:40 a.m. every morning. Her school day starts around 8:00 a.m. and ends by 3:00 p.m. She does not get home until 4:30 p.m.

We operate on a rotating 5-4-3 day a week schedule throughout the seasons so that the boys get to enjoy free time in more than just one weather climate.

My neighbor's child has June through August completely off.

We prayerfully made our decisions for this type of education for our children. I acknowledge that our choices create a different lifestyle for our sons than the child in traditional school receives. We wholeheartedly believe that we are doing our best by them. And we pray continuously for the Lord's guidance regarding them.

So, I confess to being irritated when asked to defend my schooling choices simply because I do not "give" my children a summer vacation. "??"

P.S. It was not my neighbor who made the statement. I have no reason not to believe that she is also seeking her child's best interests. May the Lord help each mama know His will for her children.

  2. Our summer vacation is 3 weeks long so we can tackle swimming lessons and go to VBS. It's a schedule that works for us because it keeps the kids occupied and happy (which translates into a happy mom) and offers that blessed flexibility you wrote about. I'd love to hear more about your 5-4-3 rotation. Is that a 5 day week followed by a 4 day week followed by a 3 day week? Fascinating. I might have to take that for a test drive.
