Hearing from God...

for some people has become quite a complicated event, confused and disputed over how you hear from God, becoming increasingly necessary to explain just exactly how you heard from God. I don't think God ever intended such difficulty for His people to hear His voice, His Words. Rather, I think hearing from God is a simple obedience.

From A.W. Pink's book Elijah:

"And the word of the Lord came to him." Note that it is not said, "the will of the Lord was revealed to him" or "the mind of God was made known"; we would particularly emphasize this detail, for it is a point on which there is no little confusion to-day. There are numbers who mystify themselves and others by a lot of pious talk about "obtaining the Lord's mind" or "discovering God's will" for them, which when carefully analyzed amounts to nothing better than vague uncertainty or a personal impulse. God's "mind" or "will," my reader, is made known in His Word, and He never "wills" anything for us which to the slightest degree clashes with that heavenly Rule.

How novel! How amazing! How gracious that hearing from God is the simple obedience to READ. HIS. WORD. And more than that, look at how simple but eternally true a promise God makes about His Word to His people:

Because thou shalt obey the voice of the Lord thy God, in keeping his commandments and his ordinances, which are written in the book of this law, when thou shalt return unto the Lord thy God with all thine heart and with all thy soul. For this commandment which I command thee this day, is not hid from thee, neither is it far off. But the word is very near unto thee: even in thy mouth, and in thine heart, for to do it. Dt. 30:10-11, 14

Read His Word. Obey what you read. Return to the Lord with all your heart and soul. So, are you hearing from God?

  2. Clem, I will stop by and read. God continues to impress this on my heart as well, so I seriously doubt that this will be my last post on the topic.

  3. Excellent post!! It seems that for one reason or another, people like to make "hearing" God more difficult than God Himself has made it.
