If you are studying God and His Word, and He is becoming smaller rather than larger, then the question begged is, "Are you really studying God and His Word?"
John Piper wrote about that on the DG blog fairly recently. I'm reading Deuteronomy too and have been so struck with God's telling the Israelites repeatedly that "this happened so that you will know that I am the Lord."
I think if He's becoming smaller then you might be reading the bible to find what you want to find and not what He wants to teach you. Just my 2 cents.
Sounds like presbyopia, maybe you just need a new lens.
