coin, I'm realizing this week. That's a good and merciful thing actually.
This weekend I had an important event to attend, and I was supposed to drive myself and three other ladies. On departure day, one of the ladies had her own providential event which meant her driving separately. I was still willing to drive, but I reconsidered thinking Husband might prefer the van while having the boys so I asked another friend to drive.
We departed, we arrived, we had a wonderful time and then, departed again and arrived again. Without any problems. Meanwhile back at the homestead, Husband and Co. used the van and also had a wonderful time. Until Saturday evening when on his own departure to home the transmission began to sputter and stutter, sliding into neutral when the essential gear was actually in drive.
Husband decreed that there would be no more driving of the van until it was checked out.
Understandably, I was relieved to not have been driving the van in big city traffic with friends while transmission gremlins wreaked havoc. I rightfully praised God for His providence in having kept me from that unfortunate event.
Monday, Husband took the van to the transmission hospital where a surgeon pronounced the transmission completely dead. Ouch! The only solution is a complete rebuild.
Now, this occurrence does not seem to be providential because before it's all said and done, there will be a large outlay of money and an indefinite time period of lack of vehicle.
Yet, if I take the tact that God is sovereign and thereby providential ONLY when events work to my benefit, I stand in great and woeful error. God is good and wise, holy and just in all events. To call one side of the coin gold and the other brass is offense to His goodness, wisdom, holiness and justice.
I do want the Lord to fill my pockets with the coins of His full providence. And this week particularly, it appears that He is so doing. Glory to His Name!

ReplyDeleteThat's exactly why I don't like it when people hear about a good thing -- such as God healing someone from an illness, or a much-needed check coming in the mail -- and they respond, "God is good!"
ReplyDeleteGod is ALWAYS good -- even to the sick one, even (especially?) to the poor. It demeans him, somehow, if we only see our material happiness and health as His providence, but not the rest.
So sorry to hear about your car trouble, but so thankful it didn't happen to you in Atlanta!
