I'm seeking suggestions for the humorous and intelligent and theological podcast ideas, please. I've entered the digital music and listening age, and I'm interested in dipping my toes into the pool. Your recommendations for favorite music, songs and albums, is also appreciated. I've been a fan of Big Band music for some time, but I'm an absolute blank on current groups since the Brat Pack, (excepting Michael Buble, Harry Connick, Jr.) and would welcome an education on some potential new bands or singers.
Second order of business: I saw this post at Hiraeth the other day, and I'm a goner for her bookmarks. Last year I ordered a set to give as gifts to several ladies in Bible study with me. I asked Kim to calligraph (is that a proper verb?) one of the significant themes of the year's study. Her Bookworm Bookmarks were well crafted, well packaged, well priced, and just well, swell as gifts. I still see ladies using them in their Bibles today, so I know that they were an appreciated gift.
So I hope that you'll visit the Bookworm Bookmarks to browse around, pump up her business, and give me a swell chance at a bookmark prize, because I do enjoy her bookmarks.
Third order of business, I'm looking for suggestions on a well written chapter book series for my first grader. He has bypassed the basic "I can read" books and is hankering to catch up with his brothers, whom are avid readers. Things like Mr. Putter and Tabby, Otto and Uncle Tooth, Frog and Toad, Henry and Mudge are just some of the ones we've completed, but hopefully will give you an idea for what interests him.
Fourth order of business, I'm interested in hearing from homeschooling moms that have used the Answers in Genesis science program what their review of the materials is. We used Apologia science this year, but I'm interested in a more student-directed program. Is it true that AIG offers that? Our homeschool convention is coming up, and I'm trying to consolidate my shopping plans so I can go directly with my $200 to Boardwalk place. Or, if you've used another science program and would recommend it, please do so. I'll have a second grader and two fifth graders next year.
Fifth order of business, thanks for coming here and reading this blog. I enjoy writing. I enjoy the interchange of comments with you, the readers. You've enriched this whole internet thing in many ways. Thanks for any help you can give on the above business.
I'm of absolutely no help on the school suggestion requests, but I can ask my sister-in-law who has been homeschooling for years (her oldest is eleven). Let me know - I am sure she would be glad to make suggestions.
ReplyDeleteI also have no idea on podcast stuff. I mean, literally NO idea. I don't have an ipod. Can I still be your friend?
Thank YOU so much for blogging here, Elle. I know I can always discover thought-provoking, uplifting, inspiring words here and it's a treat to stop by and read and talk. Keep it up, sister!
Thanks for the plug, Elle! I'm delighted that the women are using their bookmarks! That makes me very happy!
ReplyDeleteMy son started a series on American History (48 books total) in 2nd grade. It was called "An American Adventure." It was one of those "you subscribe and they send you two books every other month" or something like that.
From a weblink:
"The American Adventure books are written from a Christian perspective and include Bible verses, prayers, hymns, and moral lessons related to each story. They emphasize the significance of God in our country's history, the importance of having godly character, the relevance of wholesome family values and traditional gender roles."

Sam loved them. I think they helped make him a "serial reader" (meaning one book after another)
They are formulaic and predictable, but I think that's really a good thing for children's reading. Nothing like being successful in predicting outcomes for a kid to start looking for foreshadowing!
Even though the structures are formualic, each book has its own distinctive story. There are several women who write the series and we had our favorite, but they are all good.
I can only offer this scrap of input: Have you sampled Denver and the Mile High Orchestra? They are Christians AND a big band group. I absolutely adore their style. Their Christmas album was played non-stop at our house this year.
ReplyDeleteJanette Oke has a childrens series, Animal Friends, that is very sweet. They are sold on Amazon used for next to nothing. My beginning reader liked them. Hope that helps.
