Jesus in Matthew 4:1-11 is part of this week's text of study. I confess that this text is one of the most difficult because it involves, at least for me, the idea of holding, or trying to hold two really true thoughts at the same time--with a modicum of understanding. The first truth is: Jesus is fully man and was truly tempted as a man. The second truth is: Jesus is fully God and was without sin in every temptation.
Diluting either of these truths is error. Exalting one of these truths over the other is error. The early church councils of Nicaea and Chalcedon in 325 and 451 respectively, dealt extensively with the threatening heresies of both extremes. Praise be to God for shedding great light to the writers of those creeds and affirmations of faith through the diligent study of His word for the sake of His Church.
However, my particular point in studying this text is to write and examine the nature of each temptation and its practical applications, for my own understanding and challenge (certainly yours as well if you choose to partake in reading or comments). Blogging about this study of Matthew has become very personally encouraging. Your input is welcome. I'll post regularly as I examine each temptation.
